A tribute to culinary excellence and Basque tradition
Renowned British chef Heston Blumenthal, a pioneer of modern gastronomy and holder of several Michelin stars, was honoured at San Sebastián Gastronomika 2025 for his outstanding career and contribution to the world of haute cuisine.
As a symbol of this recognition, he received a handcrafted Basque makila made by Alberdi Makila — a traditional Basque walking stick that embodies respect, identity, and cultural pride.
Each makila is a unique piece, created using ancient makila-making techniques passed down through generations. We work with carefully selected medlar wood, shaping it into a walking stick that represents the soul of Basque craftsmanship.
At Alberdi Makila, as makers of honorary makilas and Basque walking sticks, we believe that each makila tells a story. We are proud that our pieces take part in events celebrating talent, excellence, and the heritage of the Basque Country.
Walking with a makila means walking with history, roots, and the spirit of our land.
