The Lehendakari’s ceremonial makila, a traditional Basque staff of authority.
During the official investiture, Lehendakari Juan José Ibarretxe presented the ceremonial makila to his successor, Patxi López. This unique piece, handcrafted from medlar wood and finished with sterling silver, bears the inscription Lehendakaria and is passed from one leader to the next at each transition of power.
More than a traditional Basque walking stick, the makila embodies the continuity of an ancestral tradition of makila making, symbolizing respect, leadership, and commitment within Basque culture.
This solemn gesture reinforces the emblematic role of the handcrafted makila, a true symbol of Basque craftsmanship, identity, and cultural heritage in the political life of the Basque Country.
