A makila of honour bridging cultures and traditions.
The President of the Basque Country, Juan José Ibarretxe, presented a silver makila of honour to Sahrawi politician Mohamed Abdelaziz, leader of the Polisario Front and president in exile of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
This symbolic gesture highlights mutual respect and the connection between cultures through Basque craftsmanship. The piece, crafted using traditional techniques, represents the traditional Basque walking stick as an emblem of authority, identity, and historical legacy.
At Alberdi Makila, as a maker of makilas and specialists in the manufacture of makilas, we preserve this heritage by creating unique pieces that embody tradition, pride, and universal values. Each makila is much more than just a Basque walking stick: it is a living symbol of recognition and unity.
