The makila, a symbol of respect in the tribute to the first Basque Government.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the formation of the first Basque Government, led by José Antonio Agirre, the five democratic Lehendakaris (presidents of Basque Country) gathered in a solemn ceremony in Gernika to pay tribute to this historic milestone.
During the event, the handcrafted Basque makila —the authentic traditional Basque walking stick— took center stage as a symbol of authority, respect, and genuine Basque craftsmanship. This unique piece, made entirely by hand using techniques passed down through generations, reflects the identity, history, and tradition of the Basque Country.
At Alberdi Makila, each Basque makila is more than a walking stick: it is a masterpiece that combines tradition, skill, and deep cultural value, keeping alive a legacy that continues to be present in institutional ceremonies and moments of great historical significance.
