An institutional gift with the authentic traditional Basque walking stick.

In 2015, during his official visit to Muxika (Euskal Herria), Uruguayan President José Mujica received a handcrafted makila as an honorary institutional gift from the Basque Government. This symbolic gesture paid tribute to his Basque heritage and the historic ties between Uruguay and the Basque Country.

The piece presented was an authentic traditional Basque walking stick, handmade by masters in the manufacture of makilas and guardians of true Basque craftsmanship. This personalised makila reflects values such as respect, identity, and cultural pride, becoming a living emblem of Basque tradition and heritage.

At Alberdi Makila, every makila we create is much more than just a Basque walking stick: it is a unique work forged with skill, tradition, and a deep connection to the roots of Euskal Herria. The presentation of this handcrafted makila to José Mujica symbolises recognition and appreciation for those who keep Basque values and culture alive.
