The makila, an emblem of continuity and respect in the Basque Country.
In December 2012, during his inauguration as lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu received the makila, visibly moved by this historic moment. This piece, crafted through authentic Basque craftsmanship by Iñaki Alberdi, is the traditional Basque walking stick that symbolises institutional power and commitment to Euskal Herria.
The makila has accompanied all lehendakaris since the term of Antonio Ardanza (1985-1999) and has since been passed from hand to hand at every inauguration. This gesture represents continuity, respect, and loyalty to Basque institutions and culture.
At Alberdi Makila, as a maker of makilas, we preserve this legacy by creating unique pieces that blend tradition, skill, and the highest-quality materials. Each handcrafted makila is much more than just a Basque walking stick: it is a living symbol of identity and cultural pride.
