Presentation of a Basque honorary makila to Igor Astarloa.
In an emotional tribute in his hometown, Igor Astarloa, professional cyclist from 2000 to 2009 and road cycling world champion, received a Basque honorary makila.
The makila, far more than a simple traditional Basque walking stick, symbolizes respect, recognition, and the excellence of Basque craftsmanship. This artisan stick, made from medlar wood, honors Astarloa’s career, which, in addition to his world title, saw him become the first Spanish cyclist to win the Belgian classic La Flèche Wallonne.
The presentation of the Basque makila reinforces its role as a symbol of identity, tradition, and distinction, showing how makila making continues to connect sport, culture, and Basque history.
