Alfonso Sastre and the traditional Basque makila.
The writer, playwright, and essayist Alfonso Sastre Salvador, one of the main representatives of the Generation of ’50 and winner of the National Theater Award in 1986, was honored for his deep interest in Basque culture.
As part of this tribute, he received a traditional Basque makila, handcrafted from medlar wood and adorned with brass, representing the authenticity of Basque craftsmanship.
This symbolic gesture not only highlights his literary and cultural legacy but also reaffirms the makila as a living emblem of identity, respect, and tradition within Basque society.
