Get to know our history

Beginning in 1948, by José Alberdi Arruti
The Alberdi makilas workshop was founded in Irun in 1948 by José Alberdi Arruti (Oikina-Zumaia, 1916-Irun 2009). Until the Spanish Civil War, he worked at the Azkue furniture factory in Azpeitia, where he learned to carve Wood. After the war ended, he moved to Irun with his family In this border city, he built a house with a workshop on the ground floor where he spent most of his time carving wooden furniture. Over time, he specialized in the creation of busts, heraldry, plates, etc. That contained traditional Basque symbols. His sons José Manuel Alberdi and Iñaki Alberdi worked with him and carried on the tradition.

History and tradition of the makila and traditional Basque walking stick in Alberdi Makila
In 1980 Iñaki Alberdi began his passion for making the makila, the traditional Basque walking stick that represents the culture and heritage of Euskal Herria. Before that time, the Alberdi brothers realized that, although in Iparralde the tradition of manufacturing makilas was still alive, on this side of the Bidasoa this practice had been completely lost due to the effects of the Spanish Civil War and subsequent Dictatorship.

Thanks to years of dedication and effort, Iñaki managed to rescue and revitalize the tradition of the Basque walking stick, one of the oldest signs of identity of Basque culture. In 1991 the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Guipuzcoa recognized Iñaki for his work as a craftsman, awarding him a diploma for his contribution to the conservation and enrichment of the Basque cultural heritage through the manufacture of makilas and traditional Basque walking sticks.
Today, the third generation of the Alberdi family, with Beñat and Saioa at the helm, continues the artisan tradition of manufacturing high quality Basque makilas and walking sticks, preserving the authenticity and cultural legacy of the traditional Basque walking stick.
At Alberdi Makila, we are experts in the creation of makilas and traditional Basque walking sticks, combining artisan techniques with a deep respect for Basque culture. Come and see us in our makila workshop, where we make a wide variety of traditional Basque walking sticks, and take with you a symbol of Basque history and tradition.

Estoy encantado.
