The Alberdi Makila: Symbol of Power, Respect, and Tradition for Basque Presidents
The Honor Makila by Iñaki Alberdi: Power, Tradition, and Basque Craftsmanship.
Since the mandate of Antonio Ardanza (1985–1999), the makila crafted by Iñaki Alberdi has become a symbol of institutional power, respect, and tradition for all presidents of the Basque Government. This Basque traditional cane, made using authentic Basque craftsmanship, embodies continuity, solemnity, and the cultural richness of Euskal Herria.
During each inauguration ceremony, the same honor makila, made of medlar wood and topped with sterling silver engraved with Lehendakaria (president in basque), is passed from one president to the next, emphasizing its emblematic status. More than a simple Basque walking stick, this artisan makila represents leadership, commitment, and respect for tradition.
At Alberdi Makila, we are proud that our handcrafted piece is part of this historic ritual, exemplifying excellence in makila making and standing as a benchmark of high-level Basque traditional craftsmanship.
